The boonie was introduced by the US armed forces during the Vietnam War when the Special Forces troops deployed there had the hats made in the tiger stripe camouflage pattern by local tailors. The hat shape itself has existed in Indochina for some time. Foreign legionnaires also used these. The usual steel helmets proved uncomfortable in the hot climate, and peaked caps offered less protection from rain and sun at the sides and at the back of the neck. The cut of the hat has changed little since 1967 and today, in many armies around the world and in dozens of different camouflage patterns, it is a common piece of equipment and an alternative to the field cap.
